Nutcracker Theatre Info

The following are the procedures to be used at the theatre. Any question regarding the following must be addressed to Kathleen Burnett, Artistic Director or Tracie Phillips, Ballet Mistress. Your call time is the time that you arrive at the theatre.

                1. Dancers will be dropped off at the back stage entrance at their call time. They will have their hair styled for the performance (according to the hair list), but they will not have any stage make-up on except mascara.  Dancers may not arrive, nor will they be allowed to leave the theatre in stage make-up. An AVB representative will be at the back door to sign in each cast member upon arrival. Young dancers (Soldiers, Arabians, Cookies, Owls, and Party Kids) will be met by their dresser at the sign in location, just inside the backstage door. Children may be picked up from their dresser in the black box (except for Saturday evening when children may be picked up in the west side concession area) following the performance. This procedure will be used for all Tech Rehearsals, Dress Rehearsals, and performances. Parents and/or guardians are not allowed back stage at any time before, during or after the performance, tech rehearsal, or dress rehearsal. All rehearsals are closed.

                2. Dancers will be taken to their dressing room by their dresser. Dressers will take them for make-up and then to their dressing room. Dressers dress the younger dancers, take them up to the stage at the appropriate time and return them to their dressing room until the end of the show. Dancers are to remain in their assigned dressing areas except for bathroom trips. At the end of the show, the dressers take the dancers up to the stage for their bow, then back to the dressing room to get changed to go home. Dressers make sure that all stage make-up is removed, that the laundry is placed in the laundry bins, and, on Sunday, that the dancers take home their tights and shoes and any other items they have brought to the theatre. Dressers then bring the dancers to the black box and the dressers must make sure that the dancers go home with their parents.

                3. Please bring any games, books, or other activities to the theatre to keep the younger dancers occupied while they wait for their time to perform. These need to be activities that can be done quietly. Be sure to put your name on anything that you bring to the theatre.

                4. Costumes are the property of Antelope Valley Ballet. As such, they will not be taken home by the dancers for any reason. All costumes and tights remain in the custody of the Antelope Valley Ballet staff and are washed by the ballet company staff between dress rehearsals and performances. There is absolutely no eating, drinking (except water), or sitting in costume at any time or for any reason. The cookies, soldiers, and the little Arabians are the only dancers allowed to sit in costume. Tights and shoes are the property of the dancers and should be taken home only at the conclusion of the production on Sunday. We are not responsible for any personal property left at the theatre. All other costume items are the property of AVB.

                5. You are permitted to bring a snack and water; however, this must be a snack that does not need to be refrigerated or reheated and will not create a stain on fabric. Crackers and pretzels are the best snacks.

                6. All dancers must have and bring an oversized T-shirt or a zipping sweatshirt without a hood. This will be worn while having make-up applied, when snacking, drinking, or doing any activity that could stain costumes (such as coloring). Young dancers must wear their T-shirt over their leotard and tights at all times when not dressed in their costume.

                7. THE GREEN ROOM is off limits to all cast and crew except: AVB staff, guest artists, and LPAC crew. This means: Kathleen Burnett, Tracie Phillips, Desiree Withers, John Gaylord, Marq Pendley, Jesse Marks, Holly Schmidt, and Brett Young all LPAC personnel. Absolutely no one else may enter the green room for any reason.

                8. Check all costume items as soon as you arrive at the theatre to be sure that everything you wear is at your wardrobe station. Lost costume items should immediately be identified. Please don’t be scared to tell someone that you lost part of your costume as we will need all the time we have to try to find it. Tell a dresser immediately. The dressers will try to locate the item. If the item cannot be located go to Kathleen Burnett. We do have some extra items and we may have an extra!  Otherwise, Kathleen Burnett will need to be the one to come up with an alternative.

                10. All remaining rehearsals are mandatory. The only excused absence form a mandatory rehearsal is death in the immediate family or hospitalization of the cast member. Any dancer who misses a mandatory rehearsal will not be allowed to perform. If you have to miss or be late to a mandatory rehearsal you must call 661 / 802 – 9189.

Instructions for making a Balanchine Bun

1.         Make a high ponytail – located at the crown of the head so that it falls into a diagonal line with    the ear and the chin.

2.         Fold the ponytail forward toward the forehead and place a barrette to hold the ponytail.

3.         Fold the bottom part of the ponytail back down and under the ponytail holder. Use a few hair    pins to hold in place enough to put on a hair net.

4.         Place hair net over the entire bun and use hair pins to hold in place. Now you are ready for a     headpiece!

Shoes and Tights List!

All costumes for The Nutcracker are provided and owned by the Antelope Valley Ballet; however, tights and shoes for each dancer must be owned by each individual dancer.  Dancers are required to purchase their own tights and shoes as listed on the shoes and tights list. Some dancers will be required to purchase a specific leotard or trunks. This is to ensure that you are properly garmented under your costume. You must purchase the exact brand, style and color as listed.

Please order them now so that you have time to return/exchange if the size is wrong or if the store needs to backorder your order. All shoes and tights are due to K. Burnett at your rehearsal time on the weekend of November 7 & 8, 2009. Tights and shoes are the property of each dancer and may be taken home only after the completion of the production.

All ballet slippers are to have elastics sewn on as listed. Please bring your shoes, socks, tights, trunks  – whatever is required – along with a gallon size Ziploc bag to your rehearsal on the weekend of  November 7 & 8, 2009. Please do not label them - we will all label them together at that time. This will ensure that all shoes, tights, leotards, and trunks are labeled the same way and can be easily identified at the theatre.
